Doctors Talk About Tiny Artificial Lung Recipient

A major victory is how doctors describe a medical first.

Thursday, we reported that 2-year old Owen Stark of Eldon, Missouri, is the youngest person to receive an artificial lung.

The FDA gave doctors permission to use the lung in June, as a temporary fix until a donor was found. He has a disorder in which all the blood vessels in his lungs shut down.

Without advanced medical care, doctors told the family Owen's heart would soon fail.

"He's recovered much more than any of us really thought was possible, but that's one of the joys of working with children, is they're much more resilient than a lot of people think they might be," says Dr. Mark Grady of St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Doctors say Owen may need a lung transplant in the future but his family is hopeful he'll pull through thi
